In which I get to interview one of my favorite contemporary romance authors!
#1. Socks during sex: yes or no?
This question made me laugh. To be honest: NO TO THE SOCKS! At least in the fictional sex scenes I create. Sometimes in real life, you just can’t wait! But YES to consent, condoms, and plenty of climaxes. Sex scenes happen to be my absolute favorite scenes to write. Well, sex scenes and kissing scenes. Oftentimes a good kiss can be just as memorable and toe-curling as a super intense sex scene! One of the many reasons why I love Kathryn’s books so much—she can do kissing AND sex really, really well. I bow down to you lady! (<----- I paid Jessica to say that)
What song makes you get up and dance?
Ooooh I love to dance, so this question is right up my alley! My music taste runs the gamut, from 90s hip hop and R&B to classic rock to boy bands. For every book I write, I put together a playlist of songs that inspired the story. For my latest release, SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN, that playlist included everyone from Drake to Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie. In fact, Bowie (his ghost AND his music!) makes several appearances in the book. Hard to pick the most danceable Bowie song, but I’d have to go with either “Young Americans” or the obvious choice, “Let’s Dance.”
What is your prime writing time – and how long can you write at a pop?
I’ve written a LOT of books, but I’m still figuring out my writing process. I’m a panster by nature, but I usually have a very loose outline in my head when I sit down to write. Usually I do my best writing/thinking either early in the morning or later at night. I have to get some momentum going first thing, or I’m a goner. For as much as I love being writer, writing itself is often tedious (spoiler alert: sometimes being a romance novelist is not romantic at all!). It’s hard work, always the hardest work I have to do that day. So I like to get it done, then ride that wave of productivity the rest of the day.
And my word count totals depend on whether or not I’m on deadline! My happy place is writing about 2,000 words or so a day. But with a deadline looming, I can ramp it up to 4-5,000 words. Any more than that and I am toast!
