Lololol you knew I was going to spend at least one newsletter talking about my obsession with the show Yellowjackets (click here for the season 1 trailer)
I wonโt share any spoilers, but hereโs why I loved this show in its entirety, from the storytelling, to the acting, plus the ambience. Oh, and it was clear to me that the writers had fun with it (a good reminder for all the creators reading this โ including me!)
Yellowjackets tells the story of what happened to a high school girlโs soccer team in 1996, when their plane crashes deep in the Canadian wilderness and they are not rescued for twenty-six months (!!!) The show is told through the past (the crash, the aftermath, how they survived) and the present (what itโs like for the surviving women now, living in a small town where people are desperate to know what really happened out there in the woods).
This show is full-on, teeth-out, riot grrrrl nineties energy, combined with an eerie, creeping dread, plus some pretty good horror/gore. Throw in some Lost vibes, a dark sense of humor, a lot of OTT weirdos, and the fact that all of the adult actresses are played by some of my favorite actresses from the nineties (Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci). And it is solid gold!
Itโs a show about survival and friendship, trauma and fear, love and grief. And Tawny Cypressโs character, Taissa, is gay and married to a woman in the present โ her queerness (both past and present) is core to her identity and who she is, but it is not the dominating narrative (thatโs the fact that she has to figure out how to survive in the wilderness with all of her friends). Seeing that kind of representation is really powerful for me and added another layer to a show I already loved so much.
Itโs smart, creepy, atmospheric, gory fun and I couldnโt get enough. If you loved the show too, definitely let me know!
(some important content warnings for this show: talk of suicide, addiction, violence, animal death).
